Office of Research.

About the Office of Research

From start to finish, the Office of Research works closely with faculty, staff, students and administration in The College of Education and Human Ecology to secure funds and provide pre and post-award support services for researchers. In addition, office staff administer programs for faculty and graduate students that include dissertation fellowships, travel support and seed grants. We provide training opportunities throughout the year related to proposal development and grant administration as well. In addition, we help principal investigators effectively navigate the processes for submitting and administering externally funded projects.

Position Overview

The Pre and Post Award Specialist serves the


Office of Research (OR) by providing comprehensive pre award and post award grants administration to promote and support research and scholarship in the College of Education and Human Ecology. The Pre and Post Award Specialist coordinates activities to ensure smooth transition from submission of proposals to the implementation and management of funded projects. The incumbent provides expertise in the navigation of


processes for submitting multiple types of grants, such as





, state, industry and foundations. The Pre and Post award Specialist acts pro-actively to inform and creatively communicate to faculty and research staff in identifying research, scholarship, and program funding opportunities (individual and collaborative). The incumbent researches, collects and compiles information to prepare proposals and budgets which meet department, college, university, and agency requirements. In addition, the person in this role assists with complex proposals or budgetary projects and participates in grant proposals preparation for large program projects. The Pre and Post Award Specialist collaborates with staff in the Office of Sponsored Programs (


) to coordinate all aspects of grant submission. The incumbent manages ePA-005 process and facilitates proposal submissions with the


assigned Sponsored Program Officer (


). The incumbent manages, organizes, and follows up with Principal Investigators to revise and resubmit unfunded. This person monitors personnel appointments and project expenditures and assists in interpreting and applying sponsor regulations. In addition, the Pre and Post Award Specialist establishes and maintains open communication lines and productive working relationships with researchers, human resource professionals (HRPs) and fiscal personnel across the college and


. Finally, the Pre and Post Award Specialist creates and updates programming (webinars and workshops) and content (website and wiki) that supports continuing professional development of faculty, research staff, and students. The incumbent contributes to the development of in-house publications, such as annual reports, newsletters, and communication plans. Other duties as assigned.

Position Environment

The Pre and Post Award Specialist reports to the Assistant Dean for Research with a dotted line to the Associate Dean of Research. The position is also an active team member and works closely with other members of the team as well as


faculty and staff members. The office is customer focused and each member of the team is cross-trained to support one another as needed. The environment is team oriented with lots of discussion between members. The position’s office is located in Arps Hall, North High Street.

Performance Objectives

In the first 60 to 90 days of employment, the successful candidate for this position will accomplish the following:

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of college and university policies and procedures.

• Establish pivotal relationships within the college and across the University’s grants operations.

• Conduct a review of current Office of Research processes and begin to identify areas for improvement.

Experience Requirements

The selected candidate for this position will have demonstrated success in several areas, including:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, or in an appropriate area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Considerable grant or contract management experience.

• Knowledge of University and


policies, rules, and regulations.

• Experience working with Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

• Excellent organizational skills that demonstrate the ability to pay attention to detail, accurate, and meet deadlines.
